You Should Read Graphic Novels

The beginning of 2016 was the beginning of my journey with graphic novels. I had seen them all over instagram, especially Nimona, and I was very curious. I appreciate illustration and funny conversation. I grew up reading Archie Comics with my dad and just loved them.

Graphic novels are a great way to relax and decompress after a long day. Most of them are quick, easy reads – and all the ones I’ve read have been so happy and joyful. Graphic novelists have a way of presenting serious topics in an amusing, lighthearted way that doesn’t diminish the importance of the matter.

Graphic novels are also just a whole new reading experience. I feel like my brain processes them differently than just reading. I think they make my brain happier, but I’m no scientist.

My collection of graphic novels is not very big yet, but my wishlist is. They’re usually a bit pricey (rightfully so, they take a lot of work) and I read them so fast that if I was buying them as fast as I can read them, I’d be spending hundreds of dollars a week.

Okay, now to the fun part:

Nimona – Noelle Stevenson

This was my first graphic novel and it was the perfect one to start with. It’s about a hero, a supervillain, and a sidekick shapeshifter. Buy it here, now – I know you want to after my awesome description.

Nimona is full of colorful illustrations, really wonderful characters, and hilarious conversations and situations. My husband really enjoyed it as well, he actually read the whole thing on like an hour and a half flight. It took me longer, but it was because I was rationing it. 🙂

Just look at how cute it is!

Seconds – Bryan Lee O’Malley

loved this one so much. It tells a story of a woman who gets the opportunity to re-do a day that she messed up. (The potential lessons to learn here are overwhelming.) The rules of the “do-over”:

1. Write your mistake

2. Ingest one mushroom

3. Go to sleep

4. Wake anew

I loved the illustrations in this as well, I mean look at this girl:

I would totally and completely wear this outfit

Seconds is by the guy who wrote the Scott Pilgrim series (which I have not read). But I thoroughly enjoyed this one!

and it’s super cool looking

And just a few more awesome ones:

but actually, how would you pass this thing up?

And another because my kitty is so cozy & cute

There are so many great graphic novels out there. They are so imaginative and inspiring and worth your time and money. I’ve read a few more that I didn’t talk about that are pictured above – but I would love to talk about them, so let me know if you want to know about them. 🙂
